American Gods was released onto Amazon Prime last month. Our Pearl & Pear curated supplier, LUX Technical worked on the production that transformed a London venue for the premier night.
One Marylebone in London was transformed from a converted church into scenes from the show. LUX used mysterious lighting for a forest scene, ‘candle lit’ church lighting in the screening room and well as bar lighting for the upstair afterparty.
The screening itself was a first. LUX screened the show in 4K – this was the only premier in the world to be screened in 4K.
They even beat Hollywood!
Stars of the show attended the screening. In addition to a panel style question and answers that went on with the actors.
THE SCREENING TECHNOLOGY
LUX provided a 4K playback & projection solution for the European premiere of Amazon’s American Gods. The only premiere in the world to be screened in 4K. LUX used blackmagic design hyperdecks to playback the ProRes HQ files from SSD drives. Allowing for 4K resolution and 5.1 surround sound, while being ultra reliable.
As well as the main screening, a short video of Neil Gaiman (American Gods author) introducing the first episode was played. Switching between content was achieved using a Barco E2 switcher, from here dual link SDI fed the Panasonic PT-RQ32K projector, which projects 4K at 27,000 lumens.
AMERICAN GODS THEMING
The whole venue was themed in relation to the show itself – particularly upstairs where the bar setting is almost identical to that in the first episode of the show.
LUX provided a 5.1 surround sound system in a challenging acoustic environment. A heavy baffling was installed around the screen and they implemented a delay system so that the volume stayed over the critical distance (point at which when moving away from the screen, the audience hears more sound reflected from the environment than from the direct sources, and as a result, they may struggle to understand what they are hearing). They also used D&B audio equipment for superior quality and good off axis response, keeping sound in the wanted areas.
WHAT WE LOVED
The mouth bar…. do you dare go to get your cocktail??!
“LUX were an absolute pleasure to work with on the Amazon ‘American Gods’ launch. They were, as always, extremely professional and did an incredible job. The whole team are so friendly and easy to deal with, and they made the whole process seem simple. They went above and beyond what they were asked to do, and made potentially serious problems disappear with ease.
We had some concerns about the quality of the audio in the venue beforehand, but LUX assured me there would be no problems, and they were true to their word. The event went off without a hitch.
All in all, excellent!”
